What are you waiting for? It's a matter of lIfe and death!
Chuck and Betty Share Their Experience with Organ Transplant.
In 1998 Chuck and I were talking about retiring from Gillette WY to New Mexico in a couple years.....we already had the land there near Ruisodo NM.
At his scheduled physical the Dr found his kidney numbers to be suspicious. After a biopsy in Casper Wy. he was diagnosed with incurable kidney disease, IGA Neprophathy or Berger's Disease. In the next few years he would be registered for a transplant at Mayo Clinic in Phoeniz AZ or Porter Transplant Hospital in Denver.
While he never had any symptoms his numbers continued to get worse each year. At the first visit with the transplant dr.s I offered to give him one of my kidneys. We were encouraged that I could do it but as the years (5-6years ) went on they told me I was too old to be a donor any more...oh how I wished we had done it sooner when I was able to . Our Son Lance then went to be tested and passed with flying colors. in the next few years (another 4-5 years) he became the father of two beautiful daughters. So, because we did not want to take a chance with his health, we had to tell him that we ruled him out.
Now our only choice was a donor. We waited 3 years for a donor....that is Chuck's story...but my story goes on. After Chuck had his transplant I became a "caregiver". He was an easy patient and went thru all the recovery so well! As you think and pray for the transplant recipient, think too of the ones who care for them. There have been lots of trips to Mayo hospital, lots appointents and lab work and in the past 1 1/2 years that has eaten into "our retirement time and money. But all you have to do is look at us and you will know that is is worth it all....
